Salman Rushdie, Born to a wealthy family in Bombay, British-India (19th June 1947) is a significant contemporary writer. He has numerous followers and his collection of novels is quite large in number and it's of superb quality.
Rushdie was the student of history at King's College, University of Cambridge, England. He wrote his first book “Grimus†in the year 1971 that did not gain much publicity but the second one, "Midnight's Children" was a major hit and it's still considered as one of the best works in literature. It is a fiction novel and is from the point of view of a boy who is born post-partition and experiences the situations that people during that phase faced. The way in which the author through the story explains and expresses the reality of that period is commendable. Rushdie has used very enchanting elements in the novel therefore, it's called magical realism. The novel brought him several awards like Best Booker Prize, followed by Best of the Bookers along with the great recognition.
“The Satanic Versesâ€, is the most controversial work of Salman Rushdie, though it was appreciated in the United Kingdom and even won 1988 Whitbert Award, the Muslims got really offended by it and considered it as the violation of their faith or blasphemy. This really affected him a lot for a long time and he ceased writing, but he soon started writing again after getting the support of his family and fans. According to him:
" A book is a small version of the world. If you don't like it, ignore it or suggest your option instead".
Along with the novels, he has also written short stories like "Free Radio" again a post-colonial story of a boy with flattery dreams, "East, West", and many essays. The themes that are mainly the basis of Rushdie's stories are satire, postcolonial and magical realism.
Salman Rushdie will be releasing his 13th novel called "The Golden House" in the month of September this year. It's based on the life of a young American filmmaker. Great and one of the most conspicuous writer is turning seventy today.
