"Literature can never be vulgar."- Saadat Hasan Manto

"Literature can never be vulgar.People ask me why do I write such things?

I ask you all why shouldn't I ?

Infact, everthing present before us should be written about." - Saadat Hasan Manto

In present time, movies based on the life of influential people of our society have become very popular. One such biopic based on the life of an Indo-Pak novelist and playwright Saadat Hasan Manto, starring Nawaazudin Siddiqui is coming soon.

Born in Ludhiana, Punjab, British India, Saadat Hasan Manto is considered as one of the legends of short story writing in the history of South Asia. Mostly his works were based on the life of people, their views and mentality post-partition of India and Pakistan.

In a short film directed by Nandita Das called "in defence of freedom"  Nawaazudin  Siddiqui is shown taking a class in a college where he is putting forth his views about the questions that the society asks him and how people accuse him of writing vulgar things, whereas he believes that he is showing the mirror to the society, just stating what's obvious, the truth!

"My story is a mirror in which people see themselfves and if the person with bad face hates the mirror, am I to be blamed for that? "

People were reluctant  to accept the true facts and as his work was far from hypocrisy people in power especially got offended by them. He just couldn't resist writing about the unfortunate  things happening in the society that was the reason Manto was criticized  by many people.

Siddiqui just nailed the role of the writer, he has disguised himself completely as Manto naturally not using any prosthetics not only with his looks but also by his acting, it is commendable that in spite of having only Manto's works and not any video tape of him, that could have been used to enact him still Siddiqui managed  to do so well. Also there is a heavy use of Urdu world's in the movie.

The short film  seems to be enticing and attracting a great number of audience also by it we get an idea that why the writer is greatly known for the transperancy of work.

In 2012, was awarded with  the highest civilian award 'Nishan-e-Imtiaz' in Pakistan. The first look of film  was recently  unveiled at 70th Cannes Film Festival.
